When you go on an adventure with your RV, there’s nothing better than grilling up some food at the end of the day. That said, you obviously cannot bring along a full-size barbeque in your RV or camper. This is why the RV grills exists.

However, RV grills generally are not mounted inside of an RV. After all, you cannot use a gas grill indoors.

You need to mount your grill on the outside of the RV, but how do you do this? Let’s take a closer look at all of the options at your disposal for mounting an RV grill. We’ll also talk about the considerations to keep in mind when choosing a type of RV grill mount.

Options to Mount a Grill on Your RV

There are a few different options at your disposal for mounting a grill on your RV. Let’s take a closer look at what various RV grill mounts entail.

A Bumper Mount

Perhaps the most common way to mount a grill on an RV is with a bumper mount. These are also known as swinging bumper mounts. This type of mount sees the grill mounted on the rear of the vehicle.

Many like this type of grill mount as it doesn’t add to the width of a vehicle. Many people don’t consider this, but RVs are already fairly wide, which can make driving on narrow roads a bit problematic.

This mount allows the grill to be secured to the RV while not in use and sits directly above the bumper. It locks securely into place so it does not move around during travel. This is the most popular option due to how easy the mounting process is. It’s also popular because accessing the grill is also fast and easy.

A Hitch Mount

Another way to mount a grill on an RV is by using a hitch mount. People do tend to like this style of RV grill mount because they are simple and straightforward. You literally just place your grill onto the trailer hitch on your RV and secure it in place.

It takes almost no work to set up. It also allows the grill to be placed in a fairly convenient location. While in use, the trailer hitch grill mount also allows the grill to be secure and stable. That said, these hitch mounts are usually not permanent at all.

For the most part, you have to mount your grill every time you use it. You then have to detach it when not in use, especially when driving. Although there are some hitch mounts that allow you to drive with the grill still mounted, it is not common at all.

Mounting with a Side Rail

The other option at your disposal here is to mount the grill on the side of your RV. This is done using a side mounting rail. Now, some people do find this convenient. Some people like having the grill on the side of the RV.

This is especially the case with RVs that have retractable awnings also located on the side. This effectively allows you to turn the side of your RV into a little cooking and eating area. It’s convenient in this sense.

However, it’s certainly the least convenient in terms of mounting. It requires your RV to have support poles or a mounting rail on the side. For this reason, professional installation is usually a must. Keep in mind that it can also slightly add to the width of your vehicle.

Considerations When Choosing a Grill Mount Type for Your RV

There are a few different considerations to keep in mind when choosing the type of grill mount for your RV. Let’s take a quick look.

The Type of RV

In part, what mount type you choose depends on the RV itself. For instance, for a side mount, the RV needs to have a mounting system on the side. Moreover, the walls of the RV need to be thick enough to support the grill.

If you want to use a hitch mount, then you need to have a hitch that is compatible with the grill in question. For a swinging bumper mount, you need to ensure that the bumper can support the weight of the grill.

The Position

One of the biggest factors here is where you want the grill to be placed. Would you rather grill behind your RV or to the side? If you have a side awning on your RV where you and the family can hang out, then a side mount may be best. It really all comes down to your own personal preferences.

Grill Type

Of course, the type and size of the grill itself makes a difference too. If it’s a big and bulky unit, your only option may be to mount it in the rear. You can’t have a massive grill hanging off the side of your camper as you drive down the freeway. Moreover, not all RV grills will be compatible with all mount types.

Construction Quality

The other thing to keep in mind here is the construction quality and stability of the mount type in question. If you are looking for something super durable and heavy-duty, a bumper or hitch mount is best. Side mounts are fine, but they tend to not be quite as stable or secure.

Conclusion

There you have it folks, everything you need to know about the options for mounting a grill on your RV. Now that you have all of the info, you can make your own informed decision.
